Banka BioLoo

Banka BioLoo takes the lead in providing water, sanitation and hygiene (WaSH) access for women and children and improving their health and dignity of women and girls through sustainable and affordable sanitation solutions.

Commitments:

  • By 2020, Banka BioLoo will provide accessible, affordable and sustainable sanitation solutions to 200,000 women and girls across India. The shortage of sanitation facilities in India is a major concern. Over 600 million people, half of India’s population, do not have access to adequate sanitation, which results in increased health hazards, environmental concerns, and water contamination. Diarrhea kills around 800,000 children under the age of five every year and leaves millions more malnourished and stunted, according to The World Bank. The absence of sanitation is more acute in rural and periurban areas with its higher than average population density, lack of access to water and proper sewage infrastructure. Women and girls are the major sufferers of lack of sanitation - their security and dignity are both at stake.
  • To address these challenges, Banka BioLoo is working to provide accessible, affordable, and hygienic sanitation across India, with women and girls being the primary beneficiaries of this initiative. Banka BioLoo is committed to environmental betterment and social uplift through providing affordable and sustainable solutions for sanitation and waste water for rural and urban areas in India. Our solutions meet the need for basic, easyto-install and hygienic human waste disposal mechanism in areas that currently have no sanitation facilities. To address the need for a cheaper and easy-to-operate alternative to the traditional waste disposal system, bioloos treat human waste at the source, with no need for transporting the waste, no contamination of environment or groundwater, no energy needed and no heavy infrastructure, using the bio-digester technology that was developed by India’s Defense Research Development Organization (DRDO). The system leaves pathogen-free water that can be re-used. For large biotanks, methane can be collected and used for fuel. These toilets can be installed anywhere, without constraints of land type, terrain, or distance. The bio-toilet system disposes human waste in a 100% eco-friendly manner that saves energy, conserves water, and produces biogas.
  • By 2020, Banka BioLoo will reach 3,000 schools to provide access to adequate sanitation for 120,000 girls from lowincome families across India through private public partnerships (PPP). In addition to many houses not having toilets, many schools also do not have toilets. This is not only a sanitation issue but also leads to many girls not completing their education. It is a known fact that girls, more than boys, need adequate sanitation and hygiene. We are partnering with large companies to provide bioloos, mainly for girls, in schools through the companies’ corporate social initiatives (CSR). Beginning in 2015, each year we shall build sanitation infrastructure through bioloos for girls in 500 schools, thereby reaching 3,000 by 2020.
