In support of the updated Every Woman Every Child Global Strategy for Women's, Children's and Adolescents' Health (2016-2030), BD pledges to invest in a new and innovative product that can improve the access of women and girls to vital services in low resource settings.
The BD Odon Device is an innovative device for AVB that has been invented by Jorge Odon and further developed by a multi-disciplinary group of midwives, obstetricians, engineers and designers. It is the first innovation in AVB since the introduction of the vacuum extractor in the 1950s and it is designed for use by different levels of trained health care providers.
The implementation of the clinical evidence generation plan for the BD Odon Device, including preclinical and clinical studies, was initiated in 2016 and all information generated has been and will be shared through open access publications in scientific journals. Four preclinical studies have been completed to inform the process of product development before clinical testing. Two clinical trials have been conducted to determine feasibility and safety of the device and two efficiency and safety trials are presently ongoing.
