DKT International

DKT’s commitment to Every Woman Every Child's updated Global Strategy for Women's, Children's and Adolescents' Health began on January 1, 2017. DKT committed to (1) launching affordable contraceptives in 10 more FP2020 countries in 2017 and 2018; (2) generating 10 million incremental CYPs by 2020; and (3) spending $75 million per year of our own sales revenues to procure commodities and investing $5 million per year into FP2020 countries (for a $320 million contribution). DKT achieved our FP2020 launch goals in 2017 and 2018, but DKT has continued launching contraception in additional priority countries. In 2019, DKT launched contraceptive sales in three geographies: Palestine, Somaliland, and Niger. DKT exceeded our target of 10 million incremental CYPs by 2020 last reporting period. In 2017, DKT generated 3.2 million incremental CYPs, an additional 7.4 million CYPs in 2018, and an additional 2.7 million CYPs in 2019 (46,314,079 CYPs generated through DKT’s social marketing programs worldwide). Between 2016 and 2019, DKT has generated over 13 million incremental CYPs. DKT has exceeded our $320 million reinvestment target. In 2017, DKT reinvested $145 million of sales revenue and approximately $8 million of discretionary funds into DKT programs. In 2018, DKT reinvested approximately $155 million of sales revenues and $10 million of discretionary funds. In 2019, DKT reinvested $165 million from sales revenues and an additional $8 million in discretionary funds to support DKT programming for a grand total of approximately $492 million. DKT will continue investing in FP2020 programming throughout the duration of the commitment and beyond. In 2019, our efforts to support access to family planning worldwide helped avert over 7.8 million unintended pregnancies, 35,000 maternal deaths, 56,000 child deaths, and 10 million unsafe abortions.

Key achievements: In 2019, DKT launched contraceptive sales in three geographies, generated over 46.3 million CYPs worldwide, and reinvested $165 million from sales revenues and an additional $8 million in discretionary funds to support DKT programming. DKT will continue investing in FP2020 programming throughout the duration of the commitment and beyond. Altogether, DKT’s efforts to support access to family planning worldwide helped avert over 7.8 million unintended pregnancies, 35,000 maternal deaths, 56,000 child deaths, and 10 million unsafe abortions.

Multisectoral linkages established: DKT provides ongoing support to local ministries of health and non-governmental organizations. As partners, DKT provides support in the form of commodity procurement / security and training. These linkages vary country to country; highlights include: a 507,000-unit oral contraceptive tender for the Government of Niger; service delivery outreach in partnership with the Governments of India and Mozambique; and collaborative training on Levoplant implant insertion and removal with the Liberian Ministry of Health and bilateral funding agencies.

Best practices / lessons learned: DKT is our own largest donor, with revenues from sales and services covering approximately 70% of our annual budget each year. While the FP2020 community remains steadfast in their commitments, donor support for family planning seems to be waning. In 2019, DKT launched additional sexual health products like lubricants and supplements to generate additional revenues to fund commodity procurement and other key programming costs. These products are valuable means of promoting sustainability and cross-subsidization.

By 31st December 2020, DKT will:

  • Increase the accessibility, availability and affordability of a wide variety of modern contraceptives in FP2020 countries.
  • Generate a total 10 million incremental CYPs in FP2020 countries.
  • Dchieve this increase in CYPs by increasing the number of countries it serves and by scaling up programming in current countries.
  • Scale up operations further in contraceptive social marketing in over 30 countries
