International Contraceptive Access Foundation

The ICA Foundation is a public-private partnership between the Population Council, an international nonprofit non-governmental organization and Bayer AG, a world-wide leading specialty pharmaceutical company. The ICA Foundation donates levonorgestrel releasing intrauterine system (LNG IUS) contraceptive devices on a not-for-profit basis to service delivery organizations in FP2020 priority countries.

By February 2020, the ICA Foundation has donated 150.605 LNG IUS to organizations in 36 countries. Country projects include collaborations with local notfor-profit organizations, hospitals, and global partners with a network of service delivery facilities in developing countries. Donation recipients work through a variety of means to provide women access to contraceptive options and quality family planning services.

The ICA Foundation has continued its mission of serving the reproductive needs of women in poor-resource settings. Since the Foundation's establishment in 2003, we have donated 152,505 LNG IUS to 37 countries around the world. We currently have 36 active projects in 27 countries spanning the Caribbean, South America, Africa and Asia. In the calendar year 2019, the Foundation donated 21,290 LNG IUS in 23 separate deliveries. During the period September 1, 2018 - August 31, 2019 the International Contraceptive Access Foundation has been able to serve the reproductive needs of 21,946 women.

Much of the success of the ICA Foundation has been the steady and uninterrupted supply of quality LNG-IUS products. A second factor is the collaboration between public and private stakeholders, development partners and technical assistance agencies working in unison to advance reproductive health and rights.
