In 2018 the evaluation of the past main midwives training projects belonging to the "Midwives for Life" programme showed two types of projects in the foundation portfolio. The ones conducted by international organisations aligned with international standards (strategy, M&E) but not adapted enough to the local context. The second category of local projects or community based projects aligned with ground needs with lowered capacity of monitoring and evaluation. Based on these observations combination of local and global expertise is part of the revisiting strategy of improvement of maternal and newborn health especially in sub-saharan Africa with a committment of the Sanofi Espoir Foundation from 2019 to promote sustainable actions and empower local stakeholders.
